안녕하십니까, 아시아언어문명학부의 저명학자 초청강연으로 수라이야 파로키 (이스탄불 빌기 대학) 교수를 모시게 된 것을 영광으로 여기며, 다음과 같은 두 번의 강연을 안내해 드립니다. 수라이야 파로키 교수는 현존하는 오스만사 학자 중에서 가장 중요하고 유명한 권위자입니다. 70대 중반에 들어선 현재까지 매우 활력있는 연구를 펼쳐왔고, 오스만 사회경제사에 대한 공헌에 있어서는 타의 추종을 불허하는 분입니다. 최근 지난 8월 앙카라에서 열린 세계 중동학자 대회에서 평생 공로상을 타신 바도 있습니다.

(위계질서, 자선, 그리고 무엇보다도 돈: 1720년의 왕실 할례 축제에 대한 일고찰)

첫번째 강연은 오스만 문서고의 이용이 어떻게 이루어졌는지에 대한 강연으로, 여러 국적의 다양한 학자들이 터키 국내외의 오스만 문서 컬렉션을 어떻게 이용했는지, 그리고 오스만 문서들이 제국이 포함되어 있었던 다양하고도 거대한 관계의 망을 보여주는지에 대한 것입니다.

두번째 강연은 1720년 왕자들의 할례를 기념하여 왕실이 개최한 축제에 대한 것인데, 이 축제에서는 이스탄불의 길드와 군대의 행진, 화려한 공연들, 선물의 교환이 있었습니다. 이 강연에서는 축제에서의 사회적, 정치적 위계의 표현, 술탄의 자선을 통한 정통성의 강화, 그리고 호화로운 축제의 비용을 조달하는 것을 둘러싼 여러 문제들이 다루어질 것입니다.

 I feel honored to present two lectures by Prof. Suraiya Faroqhi scheduled on October 27th and 28th She is undoubtedly the most important and renowned historian in the field of Ottoman history. Her contribution to Ottoman social and economic history is truly outstanding, and she was awarded for her lifetime achievement at the 4th meeting of the World Congress of Middle Eastern Studies, held in Ankara August, 2014.

Her first lecture is on  “The Ottoman Empire in World History: What the Archives Can Tell Us” It covers Ottoman archives.” (Rm 309, Shinyang[Humanities], 4:30 PM 10/27). It will cover how historians of various nationalities have used Ottoman collections in archives in and outside of Turkey, and how indeed the archival materials evidence the vast connections Ottomans found themselves in.

Her second lecture is entitled “Social Hierarcy, Charity, and above All Money: A Historian’s Reflections on the Great Circumcision Festival of 1720.”(Rm 302, Shinyang[Humanities], 4:30 PM 10/28) The public celebration of the circumcision of princes in 1720 involved processions of Istanbul guilds and military units, extravagant performances, and exchanges of gifts. She will analyze the social and political hierarchies acted out on this occasion, legitimation of the sultan through his charity, and issues regarding how to meet the cost of such an enormous festival.
