About the speaker:

Abolfazl Ahangari is a final-year Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Hong Kong. His research interests include theories of world and comparative literature, translation studies, political and liberation theology, and theories of modernity. His dissertation, titled "The Return:  A Poetical Theology," explores the question of subjectivity in the (post)modern condition from a politico-theological perspective.

About the lecture:

The One Thousand and One Nights, an outstanding collection of ancient and medieval Iranian and Middle Eastern folktales, played a formative role in the history of Persian literature. Its significance primarily arises from its contribution to the development of a philosophy of language and literature in the Persian world. Scheherazade, the female protagonist of this collection, employs the power of literature to transform not only the world but also the very essence of being. Through the art of storytelling, she not only saves the city but also liberates the king from the self-imposed prison of his own mind. This philosophy profoundly influenced the emergence of “the literary” in the Persian world and shed new light on the general conception of Islam in Iran, often referred to as “literary Islam” or “Iranian Islam.” Taking this into consideration, this seminar aims to rationalize the process of making the idea of Islam Persianate by re-examining the prophetic experiences of Muhammad alongside the poetic experiences of Scheherazade. By exploring this connection, the seminar will offer fresh insights into the intricate relationship between religion and literature, specifically the prophetic and the poetic, which has recently emerged as a significant area of scholarly inquiry in the field of Islamic studies. Moreover, the seminar seeks to contemplate the feminist reinterpretation of Islam by examining the role of Scheherazade and its implications for gender dynamics.
