Topic: Persisting Conflicts and Fragile Peace: Lessons from India and Colombia
Speaker: George Kunnath, London School of Economics and Political Science
Date: November 25 (Tuesday)
Time: 16:00 – 17:30
Venue: Building 5, Room 101-2
Abstract
Drawing on extensive ethnographic research on the Maoist movement in India and the ongoing peace implementation in Colombia involving the FARC guerrillas, in this seminar I discuss persisting armed conflicts and peacebuilding in the Global South. I particularly focus on intersecting inequalities of class, caste, gender and ethnicity in conflict and peace, while also addressing the questions of ethics and positionality that academics and practitioners encounter in the contexts of protracted war and peacebuilding.
Speaker’s Bio
George Kunnath is Associate Professor (Education) and Academic Lead for the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity (AFSEE) programme based at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). His work focuses on conflict, peacebuilding and research ethics. He has carried out extensive ethnographic research among the Maoist guerrillas in India and former FARC combatants in Colombia. George has published his research in Current Anthropology, Journal of Peasant Studies, Dialectical Anthropology, Anthropology Now, and Identities, among others. His book Rebels from the Mud Houses: Dalits and the Making of the Maoist Revolution in Bihar (Routledge, 2017) discusses Dalit agency and the Maoist movement in the eastern Indian state of Bihar.
