The Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā, commonly known as the Diamond Sūtra (in Chinese Jin’gang jing 金剛經, Jin’gang banre boluomi jing 金剛般若波羅密經, etc.), is at the same time one of the most popular and influential Mahāyāna sūtras to have been composed and one of the most unusual and difficult to understand. On the basis of a new edition and translation of the Sanskrit text, this talk will introduce some of the challenges the contents of this sūtra pose and consider possible responses to them. Central to the message of the work is its so-called “signature formula,” repeated in various permutations roughly 30 times throughout the text. Interpreting this formula obliges us to consider the approach taken by Kumārajīva in the first Chinese rendition of the sūtra, which he and his team produced in 402 CE. When we do so, we will see the dominant influence which Kumārajīva’s translation choices have exerted on interpretations of the Vajracchedikā up to the present day, not only in East Asia but also globally. This in turn will lead us to some general reflections on translation in the study of Buddhism.
