아시아언어문명학부 인도 전공에서 2019년 저명학자 특강에 대해  안내드립니다.

미네소타 대학교 프레데릭 애셔 교수님과 캐서린 애셔 교수님께서 날란다 사원과 델리의 모스크 단지에 대한 최근 연구를 소개할 예정입니다.

Professors Frederick M. Asher and Catherine B. Asher from the University of Minnesota will present their recent research on the Nalanda Buddhist monastery and the Qutb Complex in Delhi.

프레데릭 애셔 교수는 인도양과 인도의 시각문화 전공자로, 최근 출간한 저서로 근대이전 세계적으로 가장 유명한 불교 수도원 중 하나였던 인도 북동부 날란다(Nalanda)에 대한 연구(2015)가 있다. 애셔교수는 미국 미술사협회(College Art Association)의 전자저널인 caa.reviews의 편집장을 역임하였으며, 그 외 Archives of Asian Art의 남아시아 전공 편집자를 맡았다. 미국에서 인도연구에 대한 지원을 주도하는 미국인도협회(American Institute of Indian Studies)에서 회장, 이사, 재무를 비롯한 다양한 직책을 수행하였으며, 미국 국립미술사위원회(National Committee for the History of Art)의 회장과 국제미술사학위원회(Comite International d’Histoire de l’Art)의 상임위원을 역임하였다. 미네소타 대학교에서는 모르스 우수강의상(Morse Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award)을 받았으며 2015년에는 아시아학회(Association for Asian Studies)로부터 아시아연구 공로상(Distinguished Contributions to Asian Studies Award)를 수여받았다. 석가모니의 첫 설법지 사르나트(Sarnath)에 대한 저서가 곧 출판될 예정이며, 최근에는 남중국해와 동아프리카에 이르는 인도양 무역과 시각문화에 대한 연구를 진행하고 있다.


캐서린 애셔 교수는 이슬람미술사 전공자로, 이슬람 왕조 치하에서 지어진 힌두사원이나 무슬림, 힌두, 기독교도들이 경배하는 성소 등 무슬림과 비무슬림간 교류와 소통이 이루어지는 방식에 대해 관심을 가지고 있다. 미네소타 대학 명예교수로 있으며 미국대학미술사학회(College Art Association)의 부회장을 역임한 외에 다수의 경력을 가지고 있다. 최근 연구는 델리 최초의 이슬람 건축으로 꼽히는 꾸뜹단지(Qutb Complex)의 모스크와 미나렛 등을 새롭게 해석한 저서가 꼽히며 그 외 이슬람 왕조 설립 이후부터 서구의 진출 전까지 인도사를 남북으로 나누어 공저한 저서가 있다. 또한 애셔교수의 저술 중 인도에서 가장 강력한 이슬람 왕조였던 무굴제국(Mughal Empire)의 건축을 심층적으로 연구한 The Architecture of Mughal India는 무굴제국의 다양한 정치적, 경제적, 사회적 관계들을 이해하는데 핵심적인 저술로 꼽히고 있다. 최근에는 자이뿌르의 다양한 종교공동체에 대한 연구와 함께, 남아시아와 동남아시아에서 찾아볼 수 있는 이슬람 성자 샤알하미드(Shah al-Hamid)의 성소에 대한 연구를 진행하고 있다.  


Frederick Asher is a specialist in South Asian art with special interests in India’s visual culture in the larger context of the Indian Ocean. His most recent book, on the Buddhist monastery Nalanda, once the most important Buddhist monastery anywhere, was published in 2015.  His book on Sarnath, the site where the Buddha preached his first sermon, is in production with Getty Publications.  Asher has completed a term as Editor-in-Chief of caa.reviews, the electronic journal of the College Art Association, and a term as South Asia editor for Archives of Asian Art.  He held various offices in the American Institute of Indian Studies, including Treasurer, President and Board Chair.  He has also served as President of the National Committee for the History of Art and a member of the Bureau (Executive Committee) of CIHA (Comité International d'Histoire de l'Art).  He received the Morse Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Minnesota and in 2015, was granted the Distinguished Contributions to Asian Studies Award from the Association for Asian Studies.  His current research examines the visual culture of Indian Ocean trade, extending from the South China Sea to East Africa.


Catherine Asher is a specialist in Islamic art, focusing particularly on the interaction between Muslims and non-Muslims, for example, examining Hindu temples built in the reign of Muslim kings and sometimes with royal patronage or shrines whose worshipers are Muslim, Hindu and Christian. She is Professor Emerita in the Department of Art History at the University of Minnesota and in Spring 2018  was the Benedict Distinguished Visiting Professorship at Carleton College. She has served as Vice President of the College Art Association and Chair of the CAA International Committee as well as Chair of the CAA Publications Committee.  Other service includes serving as President of the North American Historians of Islamic Art and Treasurer of the American Council for Southern Asian Art, and Chair of the American Institute of Indian Studies Center for Art and Archaeology.  Her most recent book is Delhi’s Qutb Complex: The Minar, Mosque and Mehrauli published by Marg in 2017.  Others are India Before Europe (co-authored with Cynthia Talbot) and published by Cambridge University Press in 2006 and The Architecture of Mughal India, also published by Cambridge University Press, in 1992.  A book co-edited with Thomas Metcalf, Perceptions of South Asia’s Visual Past, was published by Oxford University Press in 1994. Her current work examines the architecture of Jaipur’s diverse religious communities and the multiple shrines to Shah al-Hamid throughout South and Southeast Asia.
