Description

Abstract

Southeast Asia Islam and Global Islamic Network

It is not only wrong but a distortion of the history of Southeast Asia Islam to argue that Southeast Asia Islam has been isolated from the center of global Muslim world, thus remaining peripheral to it. This seminar will show that Southeast Asia Islam has been continuously and closely connected with global Islamic network since Islam came to Southeast Asia in 13th century. It is not enough, however, to indicate that there has existed such connection. It is more important to explain how the nature of the network has changed historically, which is a crucial step towards understanding contemporary Southeast Asia Islam. To explain the dynamics of global Islam network in which Southeast Asia Islam has participated, I will focus on such elements of the network as the geographical grids, the movement of human agents and mediums, and Islamic knowledges circulated through the network. I'll trace continuities and transformations of the mechanism by which the global Islam network has worked through three periods of history of Southeast Asia Islam, that is, 1) between 13th and 19th when 'traditional' Islam of Southeast Asia formed, 2) early 20th century when modernist Islam was introduced into Southeast Asia, 3) after 1970s when Islamic revival movement which tilted to the fundamentalist Salafism has made strong influence in society and politics of Malaysia and Indonesia.
